Woodstock Police Service warns of an inheritance scam that aims to defraud victims of their money and identity
WOODSTOCK – The Woodstock Police Service is warning residents about a scam they are getting complaints about.
Police say residents are receiving letters purporting to inform them of an unclaimed inheritance from a distant relative in the United Kingdom.
If you receive one of these letters do not contact the sender, police warn.
"It's an attempt to defraud you out of money and/or steal your information or identity," Woodstock Police said in a media release.
Police said the fraudulent letters are addressed to the recipient both by name and home address. The letters direct the recipients to contact an accountant named Adam Westwood, 246 Upper Street, London.
Anyone with information related to this fraud case or others is asked to contact the Woodstock Police Service at 519 537 2323. One can also contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222 TIPS (8477).
