Operation Sharing partners with Foodland and Sobey's for Thanksgiving campaign.
WOODSTOCK - Operation Sharing's Food for Friends program is getting a boost starting today.
Owner Operator of Woodstock Foodland, Chris Chapman says it's the start of their Thanksgiving promotion.
"Woodstock Foodland in conjunction with Sobeys and the Sobeys store here in town, when the customers come in and they are asked, 'would you like to support the Food for Friends', they give a quarter, we're going to match that and donate a quarter as well. If they want to challenge us and give $10 well that puts us on the hook to match that and give $10 as well."
Chapman says they have done this for the last number of years.
"It helps build up the resources at Operation Sharing leading into these cold, dreary months of October and November and everyone would like to have a good Thanksgiving and a good Christmas. They are family times but we have to remember those people in our community who are having a tough time of it."
Chapman likes the Food for Friends program because he says it allows struggling residents some respect to pick out fresh food for their families and not just rely on the non-perishables that are donated to food banks.
"When you're in a traditional store and you see that food bank bin at the front of the store, how many times do you see a package of chicken legs, a loaf of bread, a head of lettuce? You don't. You see the jar of peanut butter, the Kraft Dinner, stuff like that. If you were having a tough time right now, would you like to be living on that?"
Chapman says last year the two stores along with customer donations raised $12,000 for the program locally.
Funds will be matched until Thanksgiving.
