If you're planning on celebrating Canada's 151st birthday with a fireworks display, there's a few things you should keep in mind.
WOODSTOCK - Canada Day weekend has arrived in Oxford County!
Lots of communities will be lighting the skies with fireworks this weekend.
If you decide to have your own display at home, Members of the Woodstock Fire Department have some tips.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says they want everyone to think twice before discharging.
"Make sure you are only lighting one at a time and only when they are on the ground. Never light a firework in your hand or re-light a dud firework. For dud fireworks it's best to wait 30 minutes, soak them in a bucket of water and dispose them in a metal container."
Here's a list of more fireworks tips;
- Only a responsible adult aware of the hazards and safety precautions should be lighting the fireworks.
- Read and follow the instructions on the packaging.
- Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby just in case.
- Steer clear of combustibles including buildings, trees and dry grass.
- Only light fireworks at a safe distance from onlookers upwind.
Woods adds you should only be lighting them on Sunday July 1st.
"Victoria Day and Canada Day are the only two days that we do allow fireworks to be discharged. This weekend only on Sunday should you be discharging fireworks, otherwise it's against the city by-law and police can enforce the bylaw for us."
Woods says you could be charged if you're caught breaking the rules.
