The Fire Department is asking residents to spare a moment and make sure the hydrants are clear this winter.
With last night's snowfall the Fire Department is asking for a little help when it comes to fire hydrants.
Public Information Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department Lisa Woods says if there is a hydrant near you, they would appreciate it if you could keep an eye on it. "If you could please just maintain them in a three meter area so that we can see and get at them that would be helpful. If you see a snow plow go by please look out and see if you can see the top of the hydrant for us, that would be great." She says in a crisis every second counts and when firefighters have to dig out a hydrant it waste valuable time.
Woods knows not everyone will be able to help keep the hydrants clear, but even a call to the fire department could help prevent a catastrophe later on. "If you need assistance with a hydrant - if you're unable to keep it clear - then absolutely call the fire department and we'll make sure that it's clear for our use."
There is no legal obligation to clear off the hydrants, but doing so could make a big difference in the event of a fire.
If you notice any damage done to a hydrant during the winter, Woods urges you to call Public Works so they can tend to it right away.
