NORFOLK COUNTY - According to Environment Canada 6-10 people are killed by lighting in Canada each year.
Thankfully for one family in Courtland, they didn't become one of those statistics after getting struck.
Constable Ed Sanchuk says the entire family is very lucky.
"It was determined that all five individuals were standing under two large maple trees when they were struck by lightning. As a result, they were all transported to a local area hospital for treatment. It was later determined that they all suffered minor injuries."
When you see lightning, find proper shelter, that is the message Norfolk OPP are driving home after yesterday's incident.
Sanchuk says that safety doesn't happen accidentally and that people should brief themselves as to what safety precautions should be taken in storm situations.
"There is no safe place to be outside. If you can hear thunder, it is your warning that you are within striking distance of lightning. Immediately go to a well-constructed building or a fully-enclosed metal top vehicle. Do not run under a tree or to a shelter that isn't grounded such as; a covered picnic shelter, carport, tent, baseball dugout, as well as other non-metal buildings."
Sanchuk adds that If you are caught in an open field with a group of people, spread out, crouch down and be the smallest size possible to minimize your contact with the ground, he says laying flat is the worst thing to do.
