The Woodstock Navy Vets are proving they belong in the Greater Ontario Hockey League.
AYR - It was the final tune-up for the Woodstock Navy Vets as they prepare for their first season in the Greater Ontario Hockey League.
The Vets took part in the 2026 Eli Palfreyman Memorial Tournament and had a very strong showing. They began the tournament Thursday night against the host Ayr Centennials and dominated the game, coming away with a 6-1 victory. Friday afternoon brought a date with the Ridley College Tigers, and the Vets put up 5 goals while allowing only one, en route to a 5-1 win. Their final preliminary round game was Saturday afternoon as they battled the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, and that was their only loss, which was a 6-2 score.
Finishing the preliminary round with a record of two wins and one loss, it put the Vets in a spot for a rematch with the Penguins Elite. The Vets started the game strong, opening the scoring in the 2nd period. The game was tied entering the 3rd, and the Vets scored three unanswered goals to take the championship by the score of 4-1. The Vets outshot the Penguins Elite 41-32 and won the special teams battle, scoring once on the power play and being perfect on the penalty kill.
Up next for the Vets, they prepare now for their opening GOHL weekend games. Friday night in Listowel and then their big home opener Saturday at Southwood against Stratford.
