Excessive high speed was the cause of that deadly VIA train derailment Sunday in Burlington that killed three engineers and injured 45 passengers. The Transportation Safety Board reports the train was travelling at 67-mph when it derailed while switching tracks. The speed limit while changing tracks is 15-mph. Data from the train's black box also indicates the brakes were not applied before the crash. Earlier this week, CN said it investigated the tracks before the crash and found no signs of deterioration or wear, and police have ruled out any criminal wrongdoing. It appears engineer-error was the cause of the crash, as the train was travelling four times the speed limit while changing tracks.
