Educational workers will be holding a rally tonight as they continue to fight for contracts after being without one for over a year.
Educational workers in the Thames Valley District School Board are still fighting for new contracts after working without one for over a year.
CUPE Local 7575 represents approximately a thousand educational and instructional assistants. President Heather Skolly says they are still facing challenges in a few major issues. "Locally we're looking at things like supervision and violence in the workplace. We require good language with violence in the workplace that seems to be something that's very concerning for our members. So we need to have good strong language when we're dealing with things like that."
The union has been on a work to rule since September 10th, and they've already stepped up job action. "Locally we have been meeting with our Thames Valley District School Board employer," says Skolly. "We have had one and half dates and we have two more coming November 2nd and 4th, so we are still bargaining."
CUPE Local 7575 will be meeting up with several other unions at the Thames Valley District School Board's office in London today from 4 - 7 p.m. for a rally. "The rally at the school board is a respect rally. We are asking for members of the public and other unions to come in along with ours and along with 4222 and 4186 and a couple other locals to come in and participate in a respect rally," says Skolly.
Skolly says their members are holding strong and awaiting instruction from the central bargaining unit, whether that be stepping up job action, or going for a walkout if things don't improve.
Centrally, Premier Kathleen Wynne took a firm stance on elementary school teachers, custodians, and other education support workers - she says they will have their pay docked if they don't reach contract settlements by November 1st.
