E.Coli Cases Confirmed In Oxford

Contaminated deer meat should be avoided as Oxford County Public Health confirms the fourth case of E.coli.

OXFORD COUNTY - Laboratory tests have confirmed four cases of E.coli in Oxford County.  The contamination was found in several tests samples of deer meat, which has been sourced to private hunts.    

The deer meat was processed privately at a non-commercial facility and made into sausage.

Peter Heywood, manager of health protection for the county says that people need to avoid consuming any deer sausage processed locally right now. 
 
"E.coli is a type of bacteria that can cause illness including diarrhea, which is often bloody, abdominal pain and sometimes fever, and sometimes you can have sever complications with it."  

The first case of E.coli was confirmed in February, the second in March and the third and fourth this month.  

Heywood says they have an obligation to follow up with any reports.   

"Oxford County Public Health believes that been contained and there is no risk to the general public."

Heywood adds that they are strongly advising people to dispose of the local deer meat immediately as this strain is particularly harmful.
