OPP are reminding drivers that pets on your lap while driving, can lead to distracted driving charges.
NORFOLK COUNTY - OPP are asking drivers to be safer while on the roads, and to keep their pets safe too.
Constable Ed Sanchuk says drivers are putting themselves, their pets and other people on the road at risk when they aren't safe in their vehicles.
"You're putting your safety in jeopardy. Not only are you putting your animal in jeopardy, yourself in jeopardy, you're putting the motoring public in jeopardy. We need people to use some common sense."
Sanchuk says they stopped several cars during a traffic stop in Norfolk County on February 14th, including one driver who was on their cell phone and a dog was sitting in their lap.
"The one vehicle we stopped, we had a young, little puppy. This guy's (name is) Guinness in the driver's lap and the driver was on his cell phone."
Sanchuk says drivers must put away all technology while driving and make sure their pets are safely fastened in the car.
"Please put all the technology away. If you should become involved in a collision with a dog in your lap, and the airbag in the car goes off, you're going to seriously injure or kill your animal, or yourself, first and foremost. And if you do have animals in your car make sure you have a tethered system in the backseat because if you are involved in a collision they now become projectiles."
