Woodstock and Embro Fire Departments receive 100 CO alarms each

WOODSTOCK - To kick off Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week Saturday, the Woodstock and Embro Fire Stations received 100 CO detectors Friday. 

Woodstock Deputy Fire Chief Brian Arnold says the units were donated by the Hawkins Gignac Foundation and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

"We are going to use these carbon monoxide alarms and try and get them into every home in the municipality. Home owners obviously go out and they buy them and they buy the appropriate carbon monoxide alarm for their needs however there are some homes and owners, they just can't afford it. For those who really need our assistance, we will be able to provide it for them."

Governor of the Hawkins Gignac Foundation, John Gignac says everyone should employ two principles in their homes. 

"Number one is make sure you have your appliances checked at least once a year by a qualified technician and number two, get a CO alarm and don't worry about the law. You need to have a CO alarm because the gas is colourless, odourless and tasteless, you will never know it's in your house. Don't wait for somebody to tell you to go and get one, don't wait for the law to come to your door knocking -- I think you should go and get one because it's the right thing to do."

Local MPP Ernie Hardeman says this week was selected for the Awareness Campaign to coincide with the time change.

"This is also the time of year when carbon monoxide -- when the weather gets colder -- this is when you start the fireplace, when you have open flames more prevalent then you may even in the winter time. The houses are getting more and more heat efficient but that also means less and less fresh air and more of the same air being circulated."

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week runs November 1-7.
