Changing Lives in Canada and Rwanda

Jean Claude Munyezamu will be speaking at Norwich United Church this Sunday.

NORWICH - He has changed lives in Canada and overseas.

Jean Claude Munyezamu escaped genocide in Rwanda in 1994 and volunteered at refugee camps in Somalia and Sudan before moving to Calgary in 1998.

He started a soccer program 15 years ago to inspire youth, but it eventually became Umoja Community Mosaic also providing food and online tutoring to those in need during the pandemic.

After seeing all of this success in Canada, Munyezamu decided to start some humanitarian projects in Rwanda.

"We brought clean water to this school and we built a basketball/volleyball court. When we saw the village transform, we started to do more projects."

He believes in giving people a hand up instead of a hand out, adding that people in the community pitched in to help build the basketball/volleyball court.

Three of the kids who were involved in the program in Canada have also been hired by Munyezamu as adults.

"One is the head of the soccer program because he just finished university. Another one doing our administration and another is the head of our children's program. All of the coaches we have in the community also grew up in the program."

Munyezamu will be speaking at the Norwich United Church during its service this Sunday and members of the public are welcome to attend.
