Ontario introducing legislation forcing fast food chains to post their calories up on their menu boards
It will soon be hard to avoid the number of calories you're taking in at a fast food joint.
That's because the province is introducing legislation forcing large fast food chains to post their calorie count right up on their menu boards.
Registered Dietician with Oxford Public Health, Katie Neil says this is a great first step.
"We know that they're going to have to eat out at restaurants and other fast food chains so I guess the best idea is to provide them with that health information to make that choice at point of sale."
Neil says it's hard to tell how many people think about calories when at a fast food establishment.
"Certainly when faced with that information, I think more people will be able to make a decision based on it but without seeing that information it's difficult to take into account when deciding what to order out at one of these restaurants."
Neil says people may be surprised just how many calories they are consuming.
"Usually when you just see the number kind of in your face I think it can be kind of shocking."
The move is an attempt to help people make smarter choices.
At this point, the mandatory menu labelling would only apply to large fast food chains.
