Budget Approved

Council approves 2015 Capital Budget after several motions to push back some projects and reduce funding for others.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council approved the 2015 Capital budget with a few exceptions.

Council passed several motions that reduced the 2015 capital budget spending and pushed other projects back.

Councillor Connie Lauder suggested reducing funding for Fire Department Riding Lawn Mowers by $7,000 while Councillor Shapton wanted the project scrapped. The Woodstock Fre Dpartment expressed that the lawn mowers were also used for snow removal and the current equipment was over 10 years old. Also delayed was a City Hall council chambers project costing $8,000 that would have installed a Smart Board system. That project was moved to 2016 in light of possible renovations to Woodstock City Hall council chambers stemming from a University of Ottawa deal that proposed moving Woodstock council to the Oxford County Administrative building.

Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch's motion to add another $900,000 to $4.9 million already allocated for the Woodstock Police Service building addition was defeated in a tie vote. The $900,000 was a rough estimate of the true cost of creating a third floor space, which did not include plumbing and finishes.

The other big ticket item put forth by Birtch was a proposition to create a fundraising committee to offset the cost of the Woodall Recreation Complex. The motion was reworded and passed,and the Woodall Complex phase 1 development will go forward as planned.

OPERATIONS BUDGET

Council was also presented with the 2015 Operations budget which council will deliberate over during two public meetings in February.

Woodstock Chief Administrative Officer, David Creery explained how taxes will be affected.

Creery points out that council will be meeting twice in February; on the 17th at 5 p.m. and 24th at 5 p.m. and if all goes well the budget could potentially be approved by March 5th.
