A small fishing boat sunk in Pittock earlier this month, all on board made it out safely.
WOODSTOCK -- It was a very close call for four boaters on the waters of Pittock.
Woodstock Police say they received a call July 18th around 7:30 pm regarding a sunken pleasure craft.
Four boaters were out in the 1978 14 foot fibreglass boat that was recently purchased used on Kijiji by the operator. It came with an outboard motor and ran fine during a test prior to being purchased.
The operator and three friends stopped to fish when the water started coming into the boat near the motor.
Despite their best efforts to bail out the water, the vessel ended up taking on too much water and sank. The four boaters were wearing lifejackets and were able to swim to safety.
Police say it appears the motor and occupants were too heavy causing the water to spill into the boat.
The vessel could not be retrieved from the water with the equipment available at the time. The Ministry of Environment have been called in to assess any environment damage and direct clean up. Police say further efforts to remove the boat will be made at that time.
A 31 year-old man from Kitchener was charged with Operate Pleasure Craft without Prescribed Competency under the Competency of Operators of Pleasure Crafts Regulation.
