17000 apples were given to local school children to raise awareness of healthy eating
WOODSTOCK - It was the 'crunch' heard around the County.
42 schools across Oxford County took part Thursday in The Big Crunch and Student Nutrition Coordinator Lynda Metcalfe says its a way to get students eating a healthy snack together.
"We distributed over 17,000 apples yesterday to every school and we put enough apples in each school to cover every student and every staff member so they could crunch an apple at the same time."
Metcalfe says it's to raise awareness of healthy eating.
"The apples are good for you and the abundance of fruits and vegetables we have in our own neighbourhood, we don't have to import a lot of fruits and vegetables. We want our students to eat more of them because it is healthy and good for them and they are not eating enough frankly."
Metcalfe says students were given a lesson on apples and the benefits of eating healthy.
"It's for their health and it helps them learn, it fills their tummies and eating leads to learning. The brain learns through getting glucose, which comes from food so it all ties in together."
Metcalfe says the program was once unique to Oxford but has now spread all across the Southwest Region from London to Windsor and Grey Bruce.
