Backyard Campfires Require Permits In Friendly City

Woodstock residents who want to have campfires in their backyards this summer will have to get an open air permit beforehand.

WOODSTOCK - If you want to have a campfire in your back yard in Woodstock, you do need a permit for that.

You can get a permit for free and it will last you for five years. Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods tells Heart FM what you will need to prove to get the open air permit.

"Four metres from any combustible object, as well as your property lines, so your deck, your shed, your house, anything that would be considered combustible, we just want 2 by 2 pits and we do want a great covering over them to protect any adjacent properties from the potential spread of fires. We only allow burning between 4pm and midnight, and just dry seasoned wood and charcoal briquettes, nothing noxious, painted, stained, anything that should go to Jane Street, should go to Jane Street. The fires are only for personal enjoyment, shouldn't have large flames of any kind."

Woods says the permit requires you to have working smoke alarms at your house.

"You can get a permit that will last for five years, so as long as you are at the property your at, that permit is valid for five years, if you move we give a permit for the new property, part of the by-law is to ensure you have working up to date smoke alarms and your smoke alarms should be tested once a month."
