Backflow Prevention Program Aims to Protect County Water Supply

Director of public works for the county David Simpson, says backflow can be dangerous for anyone consuming the municipal water supply. 

OXFORD - Oxford County is looking to add a bi-law that is aimed at protecting the municipal water supply.
If passed, the Backflow Prevention Program would require businesses in the county to maintain a standard of backflow prevention devices. 

Director of public works for the county David Simpson, says backflow can be dangerous for anyone consuming the municipal water supply. 

"what the backflow prevention program would address is any risk or potential where that water or worse, potentially contaminated water might reverse direction and flow back from business' service connections back into our county's municipal drinking water system."

The county will have a six-month outreach period to make the risks and costs of the program known to the public and business owners that would be directly affected by the legislation.

Eight public consultation events will be happening across the county from the end of this month to the end of March. All of which will be on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 2-4pm.

Simpson says they are excited to bring this program to the county and are looking at the fall of this year to begin implementation. 

"The Backflow Prevention Program is really considered a municipal best management practice. There's more than 50 other municipalities that have already employed a similar program."
