Today is the first day of school and OPP are reminding everyone to be safe on the roads. They say pedestrians should walk on the sidewalks and make use of the crossing guards.
OXFORD COUNTY - As students get ready to go back to school today, OPP are reminding everyone to be safe.
They say it is a great opportunity for parents to sit down with their children and talk about the importance of safety.
Media Relations Officer Ed Sanchuk says everyone needs to obey the rules of the road.
"Pedestrians and drivers need to make use of the crossing guards who will be returning to their post to help our children safely get across the streets, and we want our children to be aware that they need to obey the crossing guards."
Sanchuk says drivers should pay attention on the roads, keeping an eye on children walking to and from school.
He says kids should also use a buddy system.
"It's a great opportunity too to team up with buddies, but also to make new friends. So if you are walking to and from school make sure you walk with a buddy, have a buddy system in place and always be aware of the traffic and the surrounding areas."
Sanchuk adds school faculty should sit down with parents to ensure them of their child's safety.
He says drivers must also go slow in school zones and cyclists under the age of 18 are required by law to wear a helmet. The helmet must be properly fitted and fastened and cyclists must obey the same rules of the road that apply to other drivers.
Drivers are reminded that they can be charged if they fail to stop for a school bus when the overhead red signals are on and flashing.
Sanchuk says drivers should also pay attention on the roads, keeping an eye on children walking to and from school.
He adds Norfolk County OPP will be patrolling the roads with special attention on school zones and bus stops.
