About 20 South-Western Ontario Rotary Members travelled to Mexico recently, to administer the polio vaccine to children in Coborca.
A member of the Woodstock Oxford Rotary Club recently travelled to Mexico, to help put an end to the polio virus.
Doug Vincent was one of about 20 South-Western Ontario Rotarians who made the trip to Coborca, to administer the polio vaccine to children.
Rotary International has been addressing this issue since the 1980's, back when there were about 350,000 documented cases a year. Vincent says they have made a lot of progress since then.
"Last year we only had 22 cases around the world and this year to date we're down to five cases. We've made tremendous progress but the job isn't done until there are no more cases of polio."
Vincent says it could still be a while before polio is gone forever.
"For us to certify the world polio free by the World Health Organization, we have to go three years without any reported incidents. So we're hoping we've seen the last case but it will be another three years before we can be certified and be sure it's gone from the globe."
You can click here to donate to the cause by selecting "Global Polio Eradication" under the fund tab. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches every donation provided by Rotary International.
