Oxford County say they are investigating after an EMS travelled the wrong direction on the 401 while the highway was open.
Oxford County management say it could have been a matter of miscommunication.
During Wednesday's snow storm and multi vehicle crash on the 401 near Ingersoll, an Oxford EMS travelled eastbound on the westbound lanes of the highway between Putnam Road and Highway 73. That portion of the 401 was open at the time of the reported incident.
CAO Peter Crockett and EMS Manager Joe Pember released a statement last night indicating that an investigation in to the matter has been opened and they are reviewing the communication logs to see if there was a miscommunication between the emergency response partners.
According to the release, road closures and highway entry points are typically relayed to emergency responders through a centralized communication service and during major incidents on divided highways, ambulances are at times directed to the scene through the left side of the roadway when roads are closed to the public.
Due to the amount of collisions on the 401 Wednesday, all of Oxford County's ambulances were dispatched to assist other emergency responders with injured travellers.
Crockett and Pember say "public safety is of primary concern for Oxford County and we are taking the incident seriously."
They say their investigation will continue to prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future.
