WOODSTOCK - Diwali is known as the festival of lights, and Woodstock Fire Department want to ensure that those celebrating stay safe.
A by-law was amended in Woodstock to allow fireworks on a third day of the year for Diwali, joining Canada Day and Victoria Day. Although Diwali is a multi-day celebration, the fireworks will be permitted on Monday, October 24. Fines will be given to users of fireworks on any other day.
Public Information Coordinator at the fire department Lisa Woods shared tips on how to be "fire-safe" during the celebration.
She advises that when it comes to fireworks, a responsible adult should be in charge of lighting them, read and follow instructions keep a hose or pail of water nearby to extinguish any fires, keep them away from combustible materials, keep spectators at least 15 feet away, set off one at a time, never re-light a dud and when you're done, discharge the firework into a pail of water.

Despite some safety precautions, Woods, on behalf of the fire department, is otherwise excited for this weekend.
"This is a great celebration and we're happy that we were able to change the by-law to accommodate that. Because this is a multi-day event and celebration, just be careful with what you're cooking and with lighting your candles and your oil lamps. It is a festival of lights and we want you to celebrate fire-safe."
