The difference between winter and all season tires lies in the compound
WOODSTOCK - As the second bought of snow is expected to fall on Oxford County, drivers are being reminded about the importance of winter tires.
Managing Partner at Oxford Tire and Auto Centre Jason Hladyniuk says winter tires really make a difference with grip and control. "The winter tire is a lot softer so it's not effected by cold temperature like an all season is and that's important especially when you're in minus 20 and you've got to hit your brakes, you've got to do a quick steer. The softer the compound, it grips more to the road then an all season does."
"We all see people that go blowing by you on the highway going way too fast, it's those people there that you, if you have to make a quick adjustment or a quick brake, those winter tires really make a difference with grip and with control. They really are built for safety and they're an expense up front but really, if they save one accident then they have paid for themselves three times over."
He says winter tires should never stay on year round. "It's important to take them off when it's 7 degrees and above. Because of the compound being so soft, the hotter it gets, you know when you get into plus 14, plus 20 temperatures, it will actually start to prematurely start to wear the tires."
Hladyniuk says winter tires should last three or four seasons.
