Several issues have been found by Ingersoll staff that place the Walker Landfill proposal in direct violation of the Environmental Protection Act
INGERSOLL - The proposed Walker Landfill may be in jeopardy after Ingersoll staff found the proposal may be in contravention of the Environmental Protection Act. The Minister of the Environment Glen Murray has yet to approve the Terms of Reference submitted by Walker Environmental Group. Upon further inspection of the proposal Ingersoll CAO William Tigert discovered two regulations that the proposal may be infringing.
"There were two instances in the regulations that didn't seem to comply with what the proponent is doing: one dealt with the ownership of the property, where it's actually the owner that has to have the license to maintain, operate and close the landfill site."
"And we've only been told that it's going to be a long term lease between the current owner and the proponent Walker Industries."
"The second one was a piece of legislation in the regulations that says landfills have to be a reasonable distance from cemeteries and our Ingersoll rural cemetery abuts the property and we don't see how a landfill in this location can comply with the legislation and we've asked the Minister of the Environment to stop it based on that."
The violations of the Environmental Protection Act regulations Tigert said could result in further delays for the landfill or possibly a rejection of the Terms of Reference currently in front of the MOE.
