NASA says online coverage will begin at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
MOON - It's the moment we've all been waiting for.
The Artemis II mission has officially entered the lunar sphere of influence, with online coverage of the lunar flyby set to begin at 1:00 p.m..
The mission includes Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, and Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen. Hansen is the lone Canadian on the mission and he has a local connection, graduating from IDCI in 1994.
NASA says they will come as close as about 6,500 kilometres from the moons surface. The crew will take turns observing and taking pictures of the moon's geological features during a five hour span. They will be up to 406,000 kilometres from Earth while they're viewing the dark side of the moon. The lunar surface will also block radio signals while they're viewing the dark side, so there will be a communications blackout for about 40 minutes.
The Canadian Space Agency says the Artemis II mission will venture farther into space than anyone before, surpassing the record set by Apollo 13 in 1970.
The mission will head back to Earth following the flyby, scheduled to splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off San Diego on Friday.
We're going farther than ever before 🚀
