Fourteen women were killed with a gunman opened fire at École Polytechnique on December 6th, 1989.
WOODSTOCK/MONTREAL - It has been 34 years since a gunman opened fire at École Polytechnique in Montreal.
The mass shooting on December 6th, 1989 resulted in the deaths of 14 women including 13 students and one university employee. Thirteen others were also injured in the attack.
Today is now known as National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
Amy Maddess, the Community Development Coordinator for the Domestic Abuse Resource Team (DART) of Oxford, says a vigil wil be taking place at the Woodstock courthouse tonight starting at 5:00 p.m.
"We will be having many different speakers coming from different organizations such as DART, Ingamo Homes and Zonta. We will have Warden Marcus Ryan speaking as well."
It's being hosted by DART and the Zonta Club of Woodstock.
Maddess says this event is also part of Zonta's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
"It is the culminating event where we come together one last time before it gets too cold and just really recognize the reality that gender-based violence does intersect with mass casualties."
