Via Rail customer service and on-board service workers are expected to go on strike tomorrow, with the union saying talks have completely broken down between the two sides. The Canadian Auto Workers union says it sees "no chance'' of avoiding a strike, after the railway company presented its latest offer yesterday. The offer included two per cent annual wage increases over three years, but the union says increased pension contributions would mean workers would take a smaller paycheque. In the event of a strike, basic railway services will continue, but long distance and remote location service would be scaled back to once a week.
