WOODSTOCK - Thing are heating up in the PJHL Vets and Merchants Playoff series.
So far, the vets have proved that home ice is where they play their best as they downed the Norwich Merchants in overtime Friday night. Almost 900 fans attended Southwood Arena for Game 1 of the PJHL Doherty Quarterfinals between the Highway 59 rivals Navy Vets and Norwich Merchants.
The game was fast paced with plenty of hitting and tremendous goaltending. In the end the Vets took a 3-2 win in overtime.
President Devon Young says the Vets tend to play better at home partly because of the fans, but they also train for the size of the ice as well and tend to excel on a larger pad.
"Either your going to have some kind of adversity coming into a four out of seven series, we've done our job on home ice, and they have done their job on home ice, back and forth, and then see what happens in game three."
The Merchants redeemed themselves in their barn on Saturday, beating the Vets 3-1 and leaving the series split at one game a piece.
Young says they just need to keep looking ahead.
"I thought we had more success on Friday night with it. I thought the game play was a bit better for us on Friday night than it was on Saturday night, but I think just playing our game and not worrying too too much about the situation itself will have us successful.
The puck drops at Southwood arena at 7:45pm for Game 3 in the PJHL Doherty Quarterfinals.
