Union Drive at Toyota

Once again, Toyota workers are being lobbied to form a union

Will 2014 bring a union to Toyota?

Another drive is on at the plants in Woodstock and Cambridge, this time spearheaded by the newly formed Unifor (CAW combined with CEP).

They're currently in the process of getting workers to sign membership cards with at least 40% of the workforce needing to sign to launch a certification vote.

Director of Unifor's Organizing Department, John Aman wouldn't disclose how many they're aiming for.  "We've set a bar, and once we reach that bar we will feel confident in applying to trigger that certification vote."

At the vote, 50% plus 1 are needed to certify the union.

Aman says workers are happy with the lifestyle Toyota is providing them, but at the same time, they'd like more say on day to day issues at the plant.  "Truth and fairness and having a say in the workplace.  The vast majority of people like working at Toyota, they appreciate the lifestyle that Toyota provides for them.  But at times, they do feel their voices and their issues simply aren't being heard."

Issues regarding health and safety, along with shift changes and time off are said to be the biggest concerns.

Union drives have failed on two other occasions at the Woodstock Toyota Plant.
