Tiny Homes Coming to Woodstock

Tiny Homes are going to be built in Woodstock to help address affordable housing issues and maybe get some people off the streets.

OXFORD COUNTY - Tiny Homes are going to be built in Woodstock to help address affordable housing issues.

Oxford County council approved $1.12 million dollars from the Provincial Social Services Relief Fund on Wednesday for the project. Warden Larry Martin says these small bachelor type apartment homes will help address the homelessness situation.

"People who are homeless or a very low income, just to give somebody a step up to get started back into the workforce, have some place to live, you know there is a lot to be said for having some place to call home." 

He adds the homes will be located on the site of an existing County affordable housing project on Parkinson Road, just west of Powell Road in Woodstock.

"They will be tiny homes, basically a bachelor apartment, between 320 and 400 square feet each. They are going to be sitting in front of 32 affordable units we already have there, so we are trying to maximize the property we do own." 

More work needs to be done, however there is hope to get shovels in the ground by April, so people can move in this year.

Martin says the tiny homes would have a focus on bridging the gap between homelessness and permanent housing using community services interventions. If approved, it should be ready to go by the end of 2021. The plan right now is to start with 8 micro or tiny homes at the site to help the homeless in our community.
