Nobody was injured after firefighters in Woodstock were called out to 4 separate kitchen fires over the Long Weekend.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Fire Department were kept busy over the long weekend responding to a four kitchen fires.
Nobody was injured in any of the fires. The first two happened on Canada Day and caused About $10,000 in damage. It also resulted in a woman and her three children being displaced for a few days.
On Sunday firefighters were called to two separate kitchen fires. They caused about $80,000 in damage to the homes and resulted in two people being displaced for a couple of days.
In all four cases the fires were caused by unattended cooking.
WFD would like to remind residents of these steps to prevent a kitchen fire in your home;
- Stay in the kitchen while you cook, particularly if you are using oil or high temperatures. If you must leave for any reason, turn off the stove.
- Keep combustible items such as cooking utensils and paper towels a safe distance from your stove. They can easily ignite if they are too close to a burner.
- Keep a tight-fitting lid near the stove when cooking. If a pot catches fire, slide the lid over the pot and turn off the stove.
- Drink responsibly and keep an eye on those who do not. Excessive alcohol use often is a contributing factor in many residential fires.
The Fire Prevention Division was also busy with the Canada Day activities inspecting the fireworks display to ensure safety as well as, the food vendors at Southside Park.
