Local residents and volunteers will be helping to clean up of the Thames River on Saturday.
WOODSTOCK - Volunteers from different organizations will soon be taking time out of their day to participate in the Thames River clean up.
The formal date is this Saturday, April 23, although some organizations will be doing quiet clean ups on other days.
The clean up normally pulls about 60 volunteers a year but Cathy Stewart, clean up coordinator in the Woodstock for the past 17 years, says they always have room for more.
"We always can use more volunteers and specifically I would love to see students out. It's their future I'd like to think we're all working towards making sure it's a healthy one. But, it's also an opportunity for students to obtain community hours."
The best way to get involved is to contact Stewart. She will get you set up with a location and any equipment needed.
Typically volunteers are cleaning things like fast food cups, and plastic bags, although Stewart tells Heart FM they have found a few more unique items in the past.
"Years ago we actually came across a boxed, luckily alive, litter of kittens. We have found drug paraphernalia. We have found I guess you could say toilets and other appliances and such rolled down river banks."
She also tells us that there is more than one reason to want to help keep the river and surrounding area clean.
"Well the main reasons are two fold actually that I believe we should clean up the Thames, is one I'd like to stay ahead of the problem but also I think its an opportunity to enjoy nature and continue to perpetuate the message that looking after our water systems are important."
The river runs 273kms long and there will be different clean ups along the whole thing.
