Oxford OPP warn residents of a new phone scam in the county
Another scam is making its rounds in Oxford County.
OPP are currently investigating a scam involving a person posing as a TD Bank employee.
On February 24th, a man called a resident posing as a TD representative who said he was conducting an investigation regarding employee's skimming money from clients' accounts. He requested the resident take money from their account and deliver it to a separate location.
The resident was suspicious of the request and contacted the local TD Bank, discovering that it was indeed a fraud.
No money was withdrawn and police were notified immediately.
OPP say they are seeing an increase in calls regarding local scams and are offering some tips to try and help keep the the public safe from falling victim to these frauds.
- Contact businesses to verify information, if the information cannot be verified then do not fall victim to these requests.
- Recognize the signs, if you’re being pressured to act, disclose personal details or send money to a stranger, it’s almost certainly a scam. For example, banks would never request that you withdraw money and deliver it to someone at a separate location.
- Act quickly, contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 and stop scammers in their tracks.
- Never respond. Just simply hang up the phone and report this incident to the OPP and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at www.antifraudcentre.ca
