Superhero Fun Run Returns to Thamesford

All of the proceeds will be going to the children's hospital in London to support the NICU and Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

THAMESFORD - You'll be able to spot lots of superheroes in South Lions Park in Thamesford.

Shaye's 2nd annual Superhero Memorial 5K Fun Run will be taking place on Sunday, with registration starting at 10:00 a.m. and the run beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Sheila Weir is the organizer of the event and she's also Shaye's mother. She developed eclampsia while she was pregnant with Shaye 16 years ago, and had to be put on life support for three days.

She says Shaye was born at 25 weeks old and was rushed to the NICU.

"They were able to get her through a good chunk of it, but the way I look at it is we were blessed to have her. A lot of people don't get to meet their babies, but we were able to have her, hold her, and get those six weeks with her."

All of the proceeds raised from the run will be going back to the Children's Hospital in London, with 50 percent of the funds going to the NICU and the other half supporting Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

Weir says the course is a giant loop, so you don't need to worry if you can't complete the full 5K.

"It's 2.5K that you will do twice, but there will be a separate finish line sectioned off by a pylon. So if you can only do the 2.5K, by all means just do that and you can just come through the finish line at that time."

Participants will get their picture taken afterward, and Weir says they will have a piece of Shaye with them.

"At the splash pad, there is this big butterfly on the building, so I think we're going to do our finish photos there because the butterfly to our family represents Shaye."

Medals will be handed out and there will also be lots of prizes up for grabs thanks to the event sponsors. The Thamesford Lions have donated $1,000 to the event and they're also putting on a barbeque for the participants.
