We've been experiencing a high UV index over the past few days.
OXFORD COUNTY - With the current heat warning, the UV index has also been high.
For those who need to be outside during peak hours, Amy Pavletic, the Program Manager for Environmental Health at Southwestern Public Health reminds you that the UV rays can do damage to your skin.
"We can say to advise the time when you need to be outside, but if you can't do that, then we would recommend covering as much as you can."
Pavletic recommends wearing light, breathable, long sleeves and pants along with hats that cover your ears and neck. You are also reminded that sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 should be applied and reapplied for the duration of your time outside.
She says what you should do if you suspect possible sun-related injuries.
"So, if you are talking about skin damage, or if people have moles that might look a little bit different just to get that checked out by a medical provider."
She adds when you get a sunburn, you need to keep yourself comfortable and apply cold compresses, but if it is something that isn't healing, you should seek medical attention as well.
