Police are reminding everyone to stop for school buses after a near miss in Norfolk.
Even though kids have been in school for almost a month now, drivers still don't understand they need to stop for school buses.
OPP Constable Lisa Narancsik says a bus driver in Norfolk county has reported drivers for passing the bus while the lights and stop arm were activated. "Normally we'll periodically get a call for vehicles that have driven around a school bus with the lights and arms activated. But in this instance several vehicles have given in to passing the school bus when they shouldn't have."
School buses are not a new hazard on the road, and Constable Narancsik says drivers should simply plan ahead. "We know that school buses travel during a certain time so as vehicle drivers if we don't want to get caught in the stopping and starting of school buses then we should be responsible enough to adjust our own schedules to leave 5 or 10 minutes earlier or leave a little bit later."
"I don't understand it to be honest with you," Narancsik says. "The kids are important, we need to make sure that the kids are coming and going to school safely and I don't know if people just don't understand or if it's just simply impatience."
If caught drivers could face fines up to $2 000 for a first offence or $4 000 for repeat offenders. They could also loose six demerit points.
