WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police are warning parents to make sure you talk to your kids about staying away from the ice.
Police have gotten a few calls from concerned citizens who noticed kids playing near some of the waterways in Woodstock that are starting to freeze over. Ice can be very dangerous this time of year and a lot of factors need to be considered before it is safe to walk on or skate on.
The ice needs to be at least 15 cm thick before you can walk or skate on it and 25 cm thick for large groups or snowmobiles. People should check with local authorities before making ice rinks or attempting to walk on or play on ice.
If you do get into trouble on the ice you should;
- Yell out for help if you are alone
- Use your cell phone to call for assistance
- Use air trapped in your clothes to float if you end up in the water
- Reach onto broken ice without putting more pressure down and kick your legs to push your torso on the ice
- When you are back on the ice, crawl towards land on your stomach
Police would not advise anyone to attempt to rescue someone from ice.
