Southside Students Launch Anti-Idling Campaign

Students at Southside Public School are being encouraged to walk or ride to school this week.

WOODSTOCK - Students at the Southside Public School in Woodstock are taking a stand against idling during Earth Week.

The school is taking part in a national movement to reduce idling in school zones. Public Health Nurse Maryanne Conduk says they are encouraging parents to shut off their vehicles while they do pick up and drop offs.

"It is important that if students can walk or wheel to school that they do that or if they are on a bus, that students take the bus and not to be driving students to school because it creates congestion around the school and then we also have the pollution factor that takes place with poor air quality and smog caused by the vehicle exhaust."

Conduk adds as part of the campaign the school is participating in a Greening Tree activity.

"They are given leaves to colour, so if they walk or ride their bike to school they will colour the leaf green and if they ride the bus they colour the leaf yellow and if they rode to school in a private vehicle they colour the leaf brown and what that indicates is the health of the tree or the environment and the brown leaves indicate pollution."

Students will also be creating a sidewalk chalk mural featuring Earth-friendly messages this week and will participate in a yard clean up event.
