South Gate Centre's proposed expansion is expected to cost just over $13.5 million.
WOODSTOCK - The Executive Director of South Gate Centre has presented an official expansion proposal to Woodstock City Council.
Last month Chris Cunningham gave council members a sneak peak into their development plans for the senior's centre, which includes a triple gymnasium and a new second floor.
In order to accommodate that new level, Cunningham says their architect plans to construct new framework around their existing building.
"It's an interesting concept. It really makes wonderful use of the space and it's just so that structurally it can handle the size that we're proposing and the second floor."
If the development is given the green light South Gate will remain open throughout the construction period, which is expected to last anywhere between 3 to 5 years.
Originally the expansion was only supposed to include the gym and a few rooms, but Cunningham says they made some changes after they read a Woodstock Recreational Needs Study that was published in 2014.
"When we read that cover to cover we realized that something needs to happen here, bigger than just the seniors! That's why we put it forth and said you know what we can do this; we can share this space and it will be something very awesome."
If approved the centre would open up to the rest of the public in the evening hours.
The project comes with a price tag that's just over $13.5 million, and South Gate plans to fundraise $3 million for the cause.
Council voted to pass the proposal on to Brian Connors the Director of Parks and Rec, so he can prepare a report to bring back to another meeting.
