The Perth District Health Unit and the Local Community Food Centre will be teaming up this Wednesday, for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
STRATFORD - Perth District Health Unit and the Local Community Food Centre are promoting an anti-poverty plan to be put in place for Canada.
Wednesday October 17th is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Perth District Health Unit and Local Food Centre will be giving out a bunch of brown paper bags in Stratford's Market Square during noon hour.
Public Health Nurse Mackenzie Lawlor says they will be handing out information bags in Stratford's Market Square during the noon hour that day.
"In the bag you will find you will find a magnet which can help encourage people to sign on to our campaign which is Chew On This! You'll find a postcard which will contain information about the realities of poverty and food insecurity in Canada and it will call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to strengthen Canada's poverty national reduction strategy."
Around 900,000 citizens living in Canada rely on local food banks every month. 1 in 8 families struggle to put food on the table on a daily basis. This is where the food insecurity comes from the home's inability to get the food they need.
Lawlor says they are hoping to shine a light on this issue.
"Poverty, income and food insecurity go hand-in-hand. We hope that these events will inspire people to take action to make life better for our fellow citizens."
The Perth District Health Unit also has an initiative called The Price of Eating Well, which summarizes food insecurity in Perth County. According to their data; the average worker need to make $16.47 an hour to cover their family's everyday basic expenses including food, transportation and child care insurance.
