Sexual Assault Rates Going Down

The number of unfounded sexual assault cases in Woodstock are on a downhill slide.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service is dedicated to lowering their unfounded sexual assault rate.

Earlier this year, they found that 36 percent of their sexual assault cases were unproven between 2010 and 2014.

Inspector Paul Hess says they decided to take another look at some their old cases, some of which dating back almost eight years.

"We looked at 92 incidents of unfounded sexual assaults and as a result of that review our unfounded rate was lowered to 18 percent from 36 percent."

Hess says they are hoping to drop that rate even further.

"The Woodstock Police Service is going to be seeking out all training opportunities for trauma informed interviewing techniques so that our officers are better equipped to do interviews with sexual assault victims."

They will also conduct a version of the Philadelphia Model with the help of Domestic Abuse Services Oxford. DASO will help police review unfounded sexual assault cases in order to make sure the quality of the investigation is at its highest level.
