School Zone Safety

Members of the Woodstock Police Service have some safety tips as the kids prepare to go back to school.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police have been keeping a close eye on school zones lately, as kids get ready to return to the school yard.

They have noticed a lot of speeders in those areas. In one case a driver was slapped with a $260 fine for going 31km over the speed limit.

Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says drivers need to be vigilant, especially in those areas.

"We laid some distracted driving charges today in school zones so we're really hoping that people get the message to slow down and pay attention so we don't have any more injuries this year."

School busses will also be hitting the roads as of Tuesday. It is against the law to pass a bus when they have their lights flashing.

VanLeeuwen encourages parents to talk to their kids if they decide to walk to school.

"Make sure they walk on the sidewalk. Before crossing the road make sure they stop and look left, right and left again and never walk while wearing headphones, texting or talking."

If you plan on riding a bike or a skateboard make sure you wear a helmet.
