Drivers could be left with hefty fines if caught passing a school bus with its lights flashing
Oxford - With the kids heading back to school on Tuesday, the Oxford OPP are reminding drivers to be vigilant in school zones.
School busses will be back on the roads and substantial fines are in place if you pass a stopped bus with the signals flashing. You also need to give the busses 20 meters of space and bus drivers are told to grab the licence plate numbers of vehicles who break these laws. If the driver cannot be identified it will be the owner of the vehicle who is charged. Motorists also need to plan ahead and give yourself some extra time to get to work as it might take you a little longer than normal.
If convicted, the driver/owner can be fined from $400 up to $2,000 for a first offence and, for subsequent convictions, may be fined from $1,000 - $ 4,000, receive imprisonment, or both. The penalty section also levies 6 demerit points to a driver’s licence. This law is in place to protect our most valuable resource - young children. Passing a stopped school bus is not only against the law; it’s a potential lethal decision. Taking a few extra minutes behind a stopped school can prevent a lifelong regret of injuring or killing a child.
Police are also asking drivers to put away all the distractions and keep a close eye on cyclists and kids walking back to school.
