Resident Loses $2,000 in CRA SCAM

Norfolk OPP are once again reminding the public to be cautious about scammers pretending to work for the CRA after a local resident lost $2,000.

NORFOLK COUNTY - Police are once again reminding everyone to be cautious after a local resident lost $2,000 to what is commonly known as the Canada Revenue Agency Scam. 

Norfolk OPP were contacted last Tuesday by a victim who sent $2,000 in Google cards to what they thought was the CRA. The victim was called by a man pretending to work for the CRA, who told them an arrest warrant had been issued because of overdue taxes to the government. A request for immediate payment was made at which time approximately $2,000 dollars in Google cards were purchased and the identification numbers provided.

The OPP is urging all residents to hang up the phone if they should receive a call from anyone claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency threatening to arrest you. The fraudsters represent themselves as an agent of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to legitimize their fraudulent attempts to get residents to send them money and gain valuable personal information in the process.

The Canada Revenue Agency does not do the following:

- The CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by email.
- The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer.
- The CRA will not leave any personal information or threatening messages on an answering machine.

When in doubt, ask yourself the following:

- Am I expecting any calls from the CRA?
- Does this sound too good to be true?
- Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return?
- Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me?
- How did the requester get my email address?
- Am I confident I know who is asking for the information?
