Ontario voters will head to the polls on June 12th.
TORONTO -- Oxford, get ready for two elections in six months and three elections in the next 18 months.
Ontario voters will be headed to the polls on June 12th after Premier Kathleen Wynne met with Lieutenant Governor David Onley, who accepted her recommendation that the provincial legislature be dissolved for a provincial election.
The Writs for the general election will be signed on Wednesday, May 7th.
Premier Kathleen Wynne decided to call an election instead of waiting for her minority Liberal government to be defeated in a confidence vote on its budget.
Wynne took action after both opposition parties made it clear they would vote against the budget tabled just yesterday.
New Democrat Leader Andrea Horwath -- who's member votes were needed to pass the budget -- said this morning that the Liberals had lost the ability to make good on any of their promises.
Horwath says as a team, the NDP made a definitive and unanimous decision not to support the budget or the minority government.
The Progressive Conservatives meanwhile stated even before the budget was released that they would not support it.
Under the Elections Act, the election would ordinarily take place Thursday June 5th.
However, the Chief Electoral Officer identified it as a day of religious significance, and has recommended Thursday June 12th as election day.
Already announced to challenge Oxford Progressive Conservative incumbent Ernie Hardeman is Liberal candidate Dan Moulton. The NDP announced their candidate for the provincial election last Sunday, choosing first time runner Bryan Smith.
