Residents can still voice their concerns for waste management when it comes to landfills before an official report is submitted to council.
BEACHVILLE - Oxford County Strategic planning staff is looking to make changes to the county's official plan when it comes to the development of landfills and waste management.
A public meeting was held last night in Beachville, attended by members of Oxford County Council, OPAL, and residents of the county.
Gord Hough, the Director of Community and Strategic Planning, presented the changes and says there are a few key issues they are looking at.
"Some of the highlights include beefing up our policies on new and our existing landfills to require more diligence on the kind of work that gets completed to facilitate those things."
The president of OPAL and the Oxford Coalition of Social Justice Bryan Smith is in favour of the potential changes.
"The amendments are all progressive. They all represent what the community has asked for so I am very much in favour of those. I'm very glad that they're going in the direction that they're going, which is to reduce waste at the production side and therefore make dumps a thing of the past."
Oxford County Planning Staff will take note of the concerns that were brought forward by residents at the meeting regarding the plan. Residents who did not attend the meeting can voice their concerns to the planning staff before the end of February. Once all the concerns are reviewed, planning staff will create a report to bring to County Council. Warden David Mayberry explains what council will do with that report.
"County Council will decide whether they want to make those changes and if they want to add or subtract changes. Then we'll pass the amendments and it will go to the province to be approved."
