Premier Doug Ford Talks Tariffs

Canada's premiers met with the Prime Minister

ONTARIO - Premier Doug Ford doesn't trust US President Donald Trump to play by the rules.

While speaking with reporters yesterday, Ford said he was concerned that President Trump would open up the continent's free trade agreement ahead of schedule and "pull the carpet out from underneath us." The Canada-US-Mexico Agreement is scheduled for review in 2026, but Ford doubts Trump will wait until then, so he's calling on Ottawa to be ready for a possibly early review this fall.

Trump implemented 35 percent tariffs on Canadian goods not covered by the agreement last week.

Ford made these comments before going into a virtual meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney and his fellow premiers.

Before the meeting, Ford said he was frustrated by the US duties and called for retaliatory tariffs. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe felt differently, and said Canada should dial down its retaliatory measures.
