Practice Water Safety This Summer

The Woodstock Fire Department is encouraging parents to go over water safety rules with their children.

OXFORD COUNTY - Summer break is almost here and many kids in Oxford County will be enjoying the hot weather in the water. 

With this in mind the Woodstock Fire Department is putting out a few safety tips to make sure everybody has a safe and happy summer. 
Public Information coordinator Lisa Woods says one thing to remember is to always bring a life jacket if you are going to be using any type of boat. "Changes in the water can occur momentarily and you do need life jackets whether it's a motorized or non motorized vessel. They do need to fit properly - don't put on the adult one if you're smaller. Make sure you have one that fits you and could save you if you needed it to."

Woods says swimming should always be supervised and it is a good idea to use the buddy system when you're out in the water. A child can drown in any body of water, no matter how shallow it is and it's a good idea to set parameters if you are out on the lake this summer so they understand where they can and can't swim. 

76% of the children who have died from drowning were swimming unsupervised.
