The City of Woodstock could look to expand Southside Park, now that the Downs Golf Course has closed up shop for good.
WOODSTOCK - The Downs at Cedar Creek has officially closed up shop this fall.
Some of the land is owned by Golf North, however the majority of the land is owned by The City of Woodstock. This Fall, Golf North removed all of the irrigation systems on the land and the golf course is closed for good. Mayor Trevor Birtch says they will be looking at a few options on what do with the land now that the golf course is closed for good.
"Council received a report regarding a termination agreement that will see Golf North maintain the lands and cut the grass this year, so they will be storing the lawnmower at the current club house on Juliana Drive and the City is going to be looking at reports in the near future to see how much of the land is flood plain and what can be done with the balance of the land. I think there are a lot of residents in the Friendly City who are looking for an expansion of Southside Park."
Birtch says an expansion of Southside Park looks like a distinct possibility.
"The majority of the land is flood plain, there are a few small portions that could become residential or some of the area that is close to the 401 and Juliana could become commercial or more intense residential but the majority of the land is flood plain, so we will probably allow it to be naturalized and allow it to become another part of the Woodstock Park System."
Birtch says they will have more reports coming to council in the near future and that is when they will take a good look at all of the options.
