The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is installing a fish habitat along the Pittock Conservation Area reservoir.
WOODSTOCK - The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is creating a fish habitat along the reservoir at the Pittock Conservation Area.
Marketing Specialist with the UTRCA Steve Sauder tells Heart FM they are going to create more structure for the fish.
"This is all about providing more structure, as most people know Pittock is a man made reservoir because of Pittock dam and it is used flood control and low flow augmentation and it does a great job of that but it is not as friendly to fish as we would like it to be. So this project is going to provide more structure and what I mean by structure is by using things like logs and rocks to create cavity areas for fish to hide and we are also going to create a spawning bed closer to shore as well for nesting habitat."
The project will include planting native trees and shrubs along the shoreline and installing 300 tonnes of river stone for underwater shoals and gravel spawning beds. They will also be creating 125 metres of wooden cover structures to provide underwater shelves and planting aquatic species to enhance habitat.
This will provide food producing areas for bass, pike, perch, walleye and pumpkinseed fish.
